U9 Curling

Our U9 curling program is a great way for kids to Explore the sport of curling while learning the basic skills of the game. This program focuses on a fun experience for the kids blended with modified drills and games to develop skills associated with throwing, sweeping, and skipping. As one modification, these curlers will use specially designed half-weight ‘little’ rocks, which are much easier to control.

This U9 program is coached by current Golden Bears and Pandas varsity curlers who have received specialized training to support kids at this age and stage. Each session is 90 minutes in duration, with up to 75 minutes of this time spent on the ice. The remaining time is devoted to fundamental movement skills prior to getting on the ice. These movement skills not only act to warm the kids up, but they also help develop a strong general athletic foundation for these young athletes.

No previous curling experience is required. U9 Curlers are asked to wear a CSA approved helmet, clean athletic shoes, and warm athletic clothing when on the ice. Brooms and sliders are provided to those who need them. All curlers will receive one Golden Bears and Pandas Curling hoodie each year.

The curriculum for U9 Curling has been developed in close consultation with the Head Coach of Golden Bears and Pandas Curling, and is consistent with the guidelines of Curling Canada’s official Long-Term Curler Development (LTCD) Model.

All curlers must be 9 years of age or under. Please note that those younger than 7 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
